        Caskets and Coffins

A casket or coffin must be used for a viewing, for transport, and for both cremation and burial. A person will be buried in their coffin and people remain in their coffin for the cremation process.

There are many options when considering the construction of the caskets, such as: Solid timber, MDF solid rimu, macrocarpa,  mahogany, or pine, rosewood finish, or veneers.

Caskets have either a flat or a tiered lid, and may also be painted in any colour you choose. There is also a range of caskets available with vinyl transfers that you may choose if they reflect the personality of the person who has died.

Eco Caskets Increasingly, people are considering the effect on the environment when making funeral arrangements. Many of us have concerns about sustainability and the size of our carbon footprint.
There are a number of options available that will help lessen your environmental footprint when planning a funeral.
  • The choice of casket for one.
  • A large range of eco caskets if offered that reflect the increasing concern for the environment. The most popular eco choice is the willow casket.

Caskets or Coffins – What’s the Difference? Coffin is the term that has traditionally been used in England and refers to a shaped casket that is wider at the shoulders and more pointed at the feet. A casket is an oblong (rectangle) shape and commonly seen in the United States of America. In New Zealand we use casket to describe both shapes as it is seen as a more modern and a less oppressive word.

Personal Item’s
Coffins can have items placed on them or in them prior to the committal. If cremation is chosen then you will need to check with your funeral director regarding suitability of certain objects due to many limitations, i.e. nothing illegal, hazardous or contains glass and similar materials.
